About this tool
Going from JSON to YAML is mostly about making a machine format readable by people: indentation replaces braces, list items get a dash, and quotes disappear from anywhere they are not needed. The one thing to watch is ambiguity — a string like 'no' or '007' would be read back as a boolean or a number, so those stay quoted. Key order is preserved, so a converted document still reads in the order it was written.
How to use it
- 1Paste your JSON into the input panel.
- 2The YAML appears immediately, with keys highlighted.
- 3Copy it into your config file — and use YAML to JSON when you need the trip back.
Frequently asked questions
›Why convert JSON to YAML at all?
Readability and comments. Config that ships as JSON — a Kubernetes object, a CI definition, a tool settings file — is far easier to review and annotate once it is YAML, and most of those tools accept both.
›Does the output keep my key order?
Yes. Keys are emitted in the order they appear in the JSON document, not sorted alphabetically, so a converted file still reads the way it was written.
›How are long strings and special characters handled?
Values that would be ambiguous in YAML — leading zeros, the words yes and no, strings that look like numbers or dates — are quoted automatically so the file round-trips back to the same JSON.
›What happens to null?
It becomes an empty value, which YAML reads as null. Writing it explicitly as null or ~ means the same thing to a parser.
›Can I convert back?
Yes — YAML to JSON is the sibling page, and the round trip is lossless for anything JSON can express. Comments you add to the YAML afterwards will not survive the trip back.
